The Area

OK - as wonderful as our lake place is, sometimes you just want to get out and explore the surrounding area. You'll be delighted here as well.

  • Most famously, the birthplace of the Mississippi River is just over 20 miles away in Itasca State Park.
  • Almost as famous is the 25 foot high statue of Paul Bunyan that can be found in the legendary town of his birth, Akeley, which is just over six miles away. (Check out the Akeley Paul Bunyan Historical Museum while you're there.)
  • As long as we're talking "larger than life," don't miss the World's Largest Tiger Muskie in nearby Nevis which is just a couple miles away from the cabin. Nevis is also your closest location for your local grocery store, a couple gas stations, bait shops, a mini-golf course, some restaurants, etc.
  • The 49 mile Heartland State Trail runs right through Nevis. One of the finest trails in the state, it's on a level abandoned railroad grade for its entire length except for four miles north of Walker. The 27 miles between Parked Rapids and Walker are paved, making it perfect for biking and in-line skating.
  • The bustling town of Walker on the southwest edge of 112,000 acre Leech Lake is just over 15 miles away.
  • Always wanted to tour an Emu Farm? Well, you're in luck, because the "Heart of Minnesota Emu Ranch" is less than four miles away.
  • If you like touring ranches of out-of-the-ordinary animals, be sure to check out the Northland Bison Ranch less than five miles away.
  • Do you like to eat? Do you like fine dining? Do you like fun dining? Then you'll want to take in at least one meal in the "Restaurant Capital of the World", Dorset, MN, only a 10 minute drive from the cabin. This extraordinary small town, despite having an official off-season population of 22 people, becomes a bustling town every summer evening with five different great restaurants to choose from.
  • Park Rapids is the nearest "big town" and 12 miles from the cabin. This little town bustles in the summer and you'll find a movie theater, "live┬átheater," shopping, dining, and pretty much anything else you need, including a Wal-Mart for anything you forgot to bring. (We highly recommend Cousins Cissin' Candy!)
  • You'll find three nice golf courses all within a 15 minute drive of the cabin.
